spring is coming to an end

the funny thing about the end of spring is that you still have beautiful english peas and the end of the favas and the last of all those greens that we are constantly looking for new things to do each week, but we are itching to get into the back yard and grill. the days are so beautiful and the evenings so sunny, the birds pecking around in the garden for bugs and just a little bit of a breeze. its the perfect time to fire up the grill and throw on a big ole rib eye and some corn on the cob. i absolutely love grilling vegetables on the grill. zucchini, eggplant and thick slices of onions are so tasty with the lick of fire from the grill on them. the start of all of the wonderful summer veggies are starting to come in your produce baskets. yes, just around the corner are those fantastic heirloom tomatoes. im sure everybody is more than thrilled to finally get a piece of fruit in their baskets! last week i brought my bakers at auntie em's the first apricots and white peaches from k and k farms (where a lot of our stone fruit comes from), and i must have received 6 different texts the next day from them thanking me and telling me how sick they were of apples! this is the challenge with eating and cooking seasonally, it can be a bit boring during the cold months. it is amazing how our bodies work though, you crave those dark leafy greens and hearty root vegetables during the chilly months and nothing is better for dinner than a peach, apricot and a cocktail for dinner in the warmer months. we just dont need the heavy food now. time to shed the winter pounds!  i hope everybody enjoys the bountiful summer months. i know i have been looking forward to them.
